According to The Hollywood Reporter, British actor Henry Cavill has been cast as the titular character in Zakk Snyder’s upcoming reboot of the Superman franchise. Cavill is best known for playing the role of Charles Brandon, in the BBC 2 period drama, The Tudors.

“In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen,” Snyder said. “I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and ‘S’ shield.”

According to THR Cavill was reportedly on the shortlist for Superman Returns when McG was to direct it, but when Bryan Singer took over the project he went with Brandon Routh instead.

Superman: the Man of Steel is being directed by Zack Snyder, produced by Christopher Nolan, and scripted by David S. Goyer. The movie will be co-produced by Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, and will be filmed at Vancouver Film Studios. The release date has tentatively been set for December 2012.
