Cleaning Out the Gutters - Discussing LITG V. 2 #168

12

It’s that time of the week when I direct everyone over to see the latest issue of Rich Johnston’s Lying in the Gutters.

Now, this is Rich’s column, so I won’t repeat everything here, I will however talk about a couple of things I found interesting.

San Diego Brawling

According to Rich: I first heard of two creators who ended up in a fist fight on the convention floor, caught on CCTV with police called to attend. There are reports of another two creators involved in a serious bar fight, again with police presence. Not a great way to end the weekend…

Here is some more on this from my own digging:

Agent_M: Packing up madness! Also, Steve Niles punched some dude in the face a little while before the show ended (thanks, @cbcebulski) 08:42 PM July 27, 2021 from TwitterBerry

Matt Fraction: @agent_m steve was attacked and defended himself. he didn’t just “punch some dude in the face.” don’t make it any worse. 09:14 PM July 27, 2021 from web in reply to Agent_M

Agent_M: @mattfraction I heard he walked up to someone and was the provoking party. If that’s incorrect, then my apologies to him for the gaffe 10:22 PM July 27, 2021 from TwitterBerry in reply to mattfraction

Ahh, who cares who started it, Steve Niles rules! I bet he won, he looks pretty tough

Also, I thought I read a tweet about Darwyn Cooke being glassed, but I have no idea Who said that. Could that be what he was referencing with the bar fight?

Batman post R.I.P.

Rich has a little more on the Gaiman/Kubert two-part Batman story that was announced at SDCC this weekend. Apparently all Batman titles will be canceled for a while, and Grant Morrison will have a mini called Battle of the Cowl, where the new Batman will be decided. Rich also has some interesting theories on the next Batman too. You know who I think would make a great Batman? BRUCE WAYNE! Fucks sake…

Frank Miller

The greatest news I have heard for a while: Holy Terror Batman will no longer have Batman in it! Phew, that would have been very, very stupid. I guess DC wouldn’t go for it, hopefully he will just give up on the book as well. I hear that it is very anti-Muslim, and takes a decidedly right-wing conservative American approach to the “war on terror”.

Good sir, you messed up the names on two of those Twitters. The order should go Agent_M - MattFraction - Agent_M.

  2. Edward Kaye says:

    Oooops, I;ll change it now.

You make it sound like that is a bad thing…

  4. Edward Kaye says:

    well…..

  5. Anonymous says:

So when Batman takes to the streets and beats criminals (who have not been detained, questioned or read their rights by the legal authorities) into submission, this is not a right wing mentality? It is only when he takes the fight to a foreign land?

I guess my point is that the Batman is about as right wing a character that you can get.

  6. Kevin Huxford says:

Just for consistency sake: I just loooooove people who can’t sign a name or identifier to their posts.

Good poster of anonymity: would you call Green Arrow a right wing nut? Superman? Every single vigilante character in the DC Universe?

I don’t think a character that is “as right wing as you get” would sponsor a clinic near Crime Alley that probably doesn’t count angelic citizens in the majority of their business. “As right wing as you get” wouldn’t destroy his illegal wiretapping setup.

I think an argument that he is such a strong example base of a right wing extremist based on one issue (that he beats criminals) is weak.

  7. Edward Kaye says:

I was just going to com and reply to this. Kevin seems to have said exactly what I was going to say. Bruce Wayne is actually quite a bit of a lefty. Yeah he takes a harsh approach to crime, but the punishment always fits the crime. It’s not like he sees some kids steal candy and grinds their faces into the side-walk or anything.

Also, Bruce (current version anyway) has never killed anyone, and does not even support the death penalty. He whole-heartedly believes that criminals like the Joker do not deserve to be put in a state pen, but that they have mental problems that need treating. In several storylines he has been shown to donate money to Arkham asylum, and supports the work they do there (even though they seemingly have revolving doors on the cells!). He also does not carry a gun, ever!

I wasn’t even talking about Batman in that post. I was talking about the whole story. After 9/11 Frank Miller went from a liberal to a flag waving Bush supporter over night. From what I have heard about the story (off the net admittedly) the story pretty much says: Muslims=evil.

This is not the kind of hateful, small-minded crap that people need to be reading in such tender political times. The fact that DC won’t let the Batman character be used in the book is a bloody good sign that they do not support his political views.

  8. Kevin Huxford says:

Heh…sorry to have taken a bit of what you wanted to say from you.

But I have to disagree: you know teh muslims are teh evil.

  9. James Amos says:

    Wow, talk about weak justification.
Right wing nuts have been consistently shown to be more charitable than liberal nuts. They believe in sponsoring clinics, but they don’t believe in taking money from other people to pay for the clinic.

    Illegal wiretaps? Where?

Batman never carries a gun? Right wing nuts believe you have the right to bear arms, not that you must bear them.

Who ever says “Muslims = evil”? There are terrorists that are Muslim involved in 9/11.

  10. Kevin Huxford says:

    Weak justification?

No one said that being charitable was a Democrats only trait. I was speaking out about the particular type he was doing.

The illegal wiretapping? Are you asking about where in real life or in the Batman movie that spurred the right wing discussion? If you’re talking about in real life, there’s a reason why Bush was asking for immunity for the telecoms: BECAUSE IT WAS ILLEGAL WIRETAPPING. In the movie? If you have to ask, you haven’t seen it.

Batman is decidedly ANTI-GUN. He hates guns. If you think he’s some NRA 2nd amendment hugger, you’re nucking futs.

And no one says muslims are evil? I’d love to spend a few days as you. Such blissful ignorance alone would be a great vacation. Better yet, I’d love to live in your world where everyone says that many terrorists are muslims but few muslims are terrorists. But that ain’t reality.

Maybe if you were muslim, you’d notice it more. And no…I’m not just exaggerating what has actually been said by people. There’s still a bunch of people that have adapted the “xxxx need to go back to xxxx” to be about muslims instead of black folks. OK…some have made it about muslims IN ADDITION TO black folks.

  11. Edward Kaye says:

Sad thing is, there are idiots in this world that think that. It’s like my Mum, she his an irrational hatred of all Irish people, because she thinks they are all in with the IRA. Good Grief! In the words of Charlie Brown.

  12. Edward Kaye says:

Damn it, blogger ate my reply!

No one says Muslims are evil, they imply it. Look at these news headlines:

“Barack Obama is a secret Muslim”
and after he did a fist bump with someone “What was that? Some sort of terrorist fist jab?”.

Mental connection: Muslims are all terrorists.

It happens. You might not be stupid enough to fall for it, I am definitely not, but someone out there is.
