Jeff Lemire’s Essex County Makes the Final Five for CBC’s Canada Reads Top Books of the Decade!

1

I reported last month ago that Jeff Lemire’s Essex County trilogy had made the top 40 list of CBC’s Canada Reads - the Essential Top 10 Canadian Novels of the Decade. Then, a few weeks ago I noted that the book made the Top 10 list. Now CBC have announced that the book has made the final five!!

The Top 10 list was voted for by CBC readers and Viewers, from a list of 40 novels, which were picked from more than 6,000 suggestions submitted through CBC’s recommendation form, e-mail, Facebook and Twitter.

Five of the Top 10 titles were then selected by CBC’s five celebrity panelists to defend during the Canada Reads debates in February. The hour-long debates will air on CBC Radio One on February 7, 8 and 9 at 11 a.m. and again at 8 p.m., except in Newfoundland, where they will air at 2:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. NT.)

The Canadian celebrity who picked Essex County to defend was Sara Quin, of Tegan & Sara fame! People outside of Canada are likely asking who the hell this is, so click here to find out more.

So huge congratulations to Jeff for making the cut if you’ve ever read Essex County, or even his other works like The Nobody, or Sweet Tooth, you’ll know that this is a hugely deserved accolade. Heck, the man even made Superboy into one of my favourite monthly comics! I wish him the best of luck in winning the number one spot!

Here’s the full list of the final five, and let me just say that I am quite shocked that William Gibson did not make the cut!

The Best Laid Plans by Terry Fallis - Defended by Ali Velshi

The Birth House by Ami McKay - Defended by Debbie Travis

The Bone Cage by Angie Abdou - Defended by Georges Laraque

Essex County by Jeff Lemire - defended by Sara Quin

Unless by Carol Shields - defended by Lorne Cardinal
