The Hollywood Reporter has the exclusive that Warner Bros. have have begun work on their adaptation of the Dark Horse Comics series, Rex Mundi.

Based on the comic of the same name, created by Arvid Nelson & Eric J, Rex Mundi was first optioned in 2006, with Jim Uhls attached as the screenwriter. The script is now being worked on by Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal, who worked on Tron: Legacy, and will be produced by Johnny Depp, Christi Dembrowski, Alan and Peter Riche, and Dark Horse’s Mike Richardson.

A creator-owned property, Rex Mundi was initially published by Image Comics for 19 issues between 2003 and 2006. The title then moved over to Dark Horse Comics, where it stayed until the story was ended in 2009 with issue #38

The series is a quest for the Holy Grail told as a murder mystery. It is set in the year 1933, in an alternate history Europe, where magic is real, feudalism persisted, and the Protestant Reformation was crushed by a still politically powerful Catholic Church. All of this is woven together as “… a meditation on the prophecies surrounding the advent of the Bahá’í era.” The book takes its name from the Latin term meaning King of the World. It is derived from the Cathar heresies of the Middle Ages, and taken up in works like The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail. Within the Cathar context it seems to have been equated with the Demiurge.

Should make for an interesting movie!
