UPDATED: IDW Prepping an All-Star Rocketeer Anthology

6

UPDATE: I really need to fire my researcher, because, as multiple posters have pointed out, IDW actually announced this at SDCC 2010. I don’t quite know how I missed that one!  To clear things up, I have attached IDW’s official press release from July 2010. Sorry about that!

Amidst the massive stream of Superbowl, Cowboys vs. Aliens, Thor, and Captain America related Tweets flowing over my Tweetdeck window this afternoon, I noticed the following Tweets fly by in the blink of an eyelid:

Tommy Lee Edwards: After I wrap-up #TURFcomic issue 5, @wossy and I are excited to turn our attentions to THE ROCKETEER for IDW. Upwards and onwards..! (original Tweet)

Tony Harris: I’ll be drawing a Small 8 page ROCKETEER story for IDW!! Written by @joepruett (original Tweet)

I asked Tony what this was for, and whether it was for an anthology, as I noticed a similar Tweet from Tommy Lee Edwards, and all he replied was “You’ll see.”

Here’s what I’m expecting: IDW are prepping some sort of all-star Rocketeer anthology, featuring contributions from a number of top creators, including stories from Tommy Lee Edwards & Jonathan Ross, and Tony Harris & Joe Pruett.

It’s not a lot to go on, I know, but I didn’t want to push any further, because the creators involved have likely been told not to say anything until IDW have made an official announcement for it. I’d expect some sort of official announcement from IDW soon.

SDCC Announcement: The Rocketeer Soars Again in New Mini-Series from IDW

Top talent create new stories of Dave Steven’s classic character
Coming in 2011

San Diego, CA (July 24, 2021) - IDW Publishing, a premier publisher of graphic novels and books, is pleased to announce today an all-new, four-issue miniseries featuring Dave Stevens‘ beloved character, The Rocketeer. Coming in 2011, IDW’s The Rocketeer mini-series will be written and drawn by some of today’s finest comics creators, including Mike Allred, Kurt Busiek, John Cassaday, Darwyn Cooke, Michael Golden, Gene Ha, Michael Kaluta, Garry Leach, Bruce Timm, Bill Willingham, and many more. Alex Ross will supply stunning covers on each issue.

The Rocketeer by Dave Stevens was first published in 1982, and appeared sporadically into the mid 1990s. Despite this infrequent publishing schedule, the series developed an intensely devoted fan-following that treasured each new installment. Tragically, Stevens passed away in 2008 after a lengthy battle with Leukemia. In remembrance of this brilliant artist, a substantial portion of profits earned from this new mini-series will be donated to Hairy Cell Leukemia research by the estate of Dave Stevens, the creators involved, and IDW Publishing.

“Dave Stevens was an incredibly talented artist and a wonderful person,” said IDW Special Projects Editor Scott Dunbier. “I would like to think that he would be happy with a book like this, one that pays such loving tribute to his greatest creation.”

The Rocketeer #1 (of 4) will be available in stores in 2011.

An official announcement was made last July, so you should be free to write about it.

IDW already made an announcement about this series at SDCC ’10. It is (was? if things have changed since then) a 4 issue mini-series. They also released some names of the creators that were expected to be involved and Alex Ross’ cover image for #1:

Thanks for all the updates. Hmm, I think that’s a massive fail on my part, how on earth had I not heard of this before?

I shall update the story right now.

    Thanks again!
