Artwork of Leigh Gallagher and Garen Ewing Immortalized in Royal Mail’s Latest Stamp Collection!

I just caught this piece of new over on Garen Ewing‘s blog:

It would appear that the Royal Mail will be releasing their latest stamp collection today, with the theme being musicals. There are eight stamps in all - four first class and four 97p. The first class includes Oliver, Blood Brothers, We Will Rock You and Spamalot, while the Rocky Horror Show, Me and My Girl, Return to the Forbidden Planet and Billy Elliot make up the 97p stamps.

Of the pieces of art used for the eight stamps, two of them are drawn by artists from the British comics scene, with the Return to the Forbidden Planet stamp being based on Garen Ewing‘s 2005 design for Josef Weinberger Ltd., and the Rocky Horror Show stamp being based upon 2000AD artist Leigh Gallagher‘s 2006  poster for SWD.

Head over to Garen Ewing’s blog to hear the story behind his piece, and a look at his initial sketches.

UPDATE: Leigh Gallagher has just updated his blog with one of his fantastic ‘making of’ posts for his Rocky Horror artwork, going from the initial pencils to the final artwork that appeared on the poster. As a bonus, he’s even thrown in some of panels he drew for the comic that was included in the collectible brochure. I love these ‘making of’ posts!

I have to say, this is pretty cool news, and it’s great to see Leigh’s artwork being picked. Maybe we can home to see a Defoe stamp? Maybe as part of a line of stamps based on great 2000 AD strips? We can but dream
