James Mangold to Direct The Wolverine

Deadline.com has the scoop that 20th Century Fox and Hugh Jackman have chosen James Mangold to direct The Wolverine.

Negotiations haven’t yet begun, but Deadline’s sources have told that Mangold will accept the position. The original director for the movie was set to be Darren Aronofsky, but he dropped out of the project in May, sparking much competition between potential directors to get the high-profile gig.

Mangold’s previous directing credits include Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma, and Girl Interupted.

Principal photography for the movie is set to begin in Japan in the fall. The script is being written by Christopher McQuarrie. The plot will be based around Wolverine’s exploits in Japan and will be modeled after Chris Claremont and Frank Miller’s 1982 limited series on the character
