On Thursday afternoon, during a liveblog press conference about changes coming to the Ultimate Comics line, Marvel announced that they will be rebooting Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man with a new #1 issue, from the creative team of Brain Michael Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli.
The series will be part of the “Ultimate Comics Universe Reborn” banner, which follows the events of the “Death of Spider-Man” arc happening now in Ultimate Spider-Man and Ultimate Avengers vs. New Ultimates, and continuing in the weekly July series Ultimate Fallout.
Ultimate Fallout, beginning this July, will be a bridge between “Death of Spider-Man” and this rebirth of the Ultimate Comics line. It will touch on all the prominent characters who will be featured upcoming and showing how the Death of Spider-Man affected them. It will be written by all the writers working on the new books, including Jonathan Hickman, Nick Spencer, and Brian Michael Bendis.
Bendis says of the new series that, “People will see from the very first page that this is very different from what we’ve seen before. Not for shock value or cheap theatrics, but for new characters and a new landscape to explore Marvel.”
He explains that when he and Mark Millar were hired to start the Ultimate Universe they were seen as unique voices with something new to say. He says that he is incredibly proud of Jonathan Hickman, impressed by Nick Spencer, and is excited to work on a “tight, cohesive universe with them.”
Bendis says that he, Hickman and Spencer have been working together for months to plan this, which will contrast from the early days of the original Ultimate Universe where Ultimates had a different schedule and Ultimate Spider-Man really couldn’t acknowledge it as much as he wanted to.
Ultimate Fallout will spin directly out of Ultimate Spider-Man #160. You get “a taste of every character in the Ultimate Spider-Man universe and their reaction to events.” Bendis says that Ultimate Spider-Man #160 and Ultimate Fallout were two of the most emotional comics from him he has ever written.
Bendis teased that Spider-Man will have new powers in this new series, and that he did research on spiders.
On the controvery associated with rebooting the title with a third #1 issue, Bendis stated that “This needs to be a new #1 issue even by the most cynical fanboy qualifications.”
“Death of Spider-Man is about one moment connecting two books. The new books will be more like the early days of the original Marvel Universe where little things like Thor flying by in a Spider-Man book was really cool” said Bendis.
