Joanne Siegel Passes Away At Age 93

1

The Cleveland Plain Dealer has confirmed the news that Joanne Siegel, the wife of Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel, passed away on Monday, at the age of 93.

Joanne first met Jerry, and Superman co-creator Joe Shuster, as a teenager, in Depression-era Cleveland, when she she placed an advertisement in the classified section of The Plain Dealer offering to model. Shuster contacted her and she modeled for him, never realizing that she would become the basis for Superman’s love interest, Louis Lane.

Joanne met Jerry in the 1930s, but they did not marry until 1948, after his divorce from Bella Siegel became final. The couple would remain together until Jerry Siegel’s death in 1993.
