The Bottle City of Kandor Appears in LA Art Exhibition

The LA Times is reporting that artist Mike Kelley is holding his first solo exhibition of artwork in nearly eight years, at the Gagosian Gallery in Los Angeles.

One of the key pieces in the installation is said to be a replica of the bottle city of Kandor from DC’s Superman comics. Depending upon which origin story you go by (stupid retcons), Kandor was the capital city of Krypton, which super-villain Braniac miniaturized some time before the destruction of the planet, and kept stored in a bottle.

According to the LA times article, “Kelley’s sleek Kandor models, made from illuminated cast-resin, are a mind-bending metaphor for the synthetic, scientifically driven, highly infantilized and thoroughly mediated bubble in which modern life is lived.”
