DC Announces Their Next Weekly Series - DC: Legends

DC have announced that their next weekly series will be DC: Legends, and will be set within the world of ‘DC Universe Online‘, the upcoming Massive Multiplayer Online Action Game from Sony Online Entertainment.

For those unfamiliar with the game, here’s what Sony has to say about it:

DCUO offers a dramatic online setting where players can enter the DC Universe and battle alongside or against their favorite DC Comics heroes and villains including such icons as Batman™, Superman™, Wonder Woman™, and The Joker™, as well as many other fan favorites such as Green Lantern™, The Flash™, Catwoman™ and Martian Manhunter™. The action and drama will play out in such well-known locations as Gotham City™ and Metropolis among others.

It’s a pretty risky idea for a weekly series really, because the audience will really have to be both fans of comics and fans of games. Comic readers who don’t play the game probably won’t be very interested in reading a series set within that world, and many people play the game will most likely not be interested in reading the comic. For example, as a Mac user, I probably wont be able to play the game, so it’s unlikely that I will want to read a comic series based within the world of a game that I am not playing. It may very well work out for them, but still, it’s pretty risky!

In an interview with IGN, Dan Didio reveals how the idea was spawned:

“Well, it sort of came about together. Sony Online Entertainment was in the process of building the game. They were working with Jim Lee and used some of our writers. Geoff Johns did the initial bible for the game, setting up the world. They’re working with so much of our talent at Wildstorm as well that we felt it would only be natural to create something that would be able to not only support but expand upon and interact with the game itself.”
