April Fools - Grant Morrison & Frank Quitely to Create Rival Thor Series for DC

[In case you hadn't guessed, this was an April Fools joke!]

Sources close to the project have informed me that DC Comics are gearing up to release their own Thor comic, to capitalize on the buzz surrounding Marvel Studios’ big summer blockbuster. I have been told that they are able to do this because the character isn’t actually owned by Marvel, due to the fact that he originates in Norse mythology, so he’s completely in the public domain. However, to avoid legal difficulties, they intend to market the character as The Odinson on comic covers, much like how Captain Marvel is marketted as Shazam.

My source tells me that DC have tapped the All-Star Superman creative team of Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely to bring the Norse god into the DC universe. I have been reliably informed that DC plan to break this news during the DC Nation panel, this Saturday at WonderCon, where Quitely will be in attendance.

Morrison has often times been quoted as saying that he sees superheros as being the modern equivalent of the god myth, and apparently jumped at the chance to write a comic featuring an actual god turned superhero.

This won’t actually be the first time that Thor has appeared in the DC universe, as he appeared several times during the Silver-Age as Thor Odinson. However, the character was wiped out of existence during the Crisis on Infinite Earths, when Earth 1 ceased to exist. Now the Multiverse is back though, and so is the character, and Morrison’s first story arc will apparently deal with how the whole Multiverse thing fits in with the Norse legend of Yggdrasil, the World tree, with its nine worlds. The resolution of this story will play a huge part in Morrison’s upcoming Multiversity event series.

Sadly, I was unable to get my hands on any of Quitely’s pages for the first issue, but I will post them here as soon as DC puts them out.

You heard it here first!
