Designers and Illustrators at Comic-Con

San Diego, July 15…The Art Directors Guild in its fourth year at Comic-Con is well represented this year, with Guild members participating in three panels on July 23 and 24 at the San Diego Convention Center.

The Production Designers panel includes Barry Robison, the man who designed the soon to be released “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader;” Kirk Petruccelli, responsible for one of the “Fantastic Four” movies and two “Lara Croft,” films as well as “Blade;” and Oliver Scholl, who designed “The Time Machine” and “Independence Day.” For something a little different there’s Mimi Gramatky (“Lost”) who has just finished filming 12 eight-minute webisodes of “10,000 Days,” probably the most ambitious film in the genre ever made. Mimi will show a clip from the film. John Muto, who designed the “Terminator 2: 3D” show, will moderate. All this takes place on Friday, July 23 at 1:00 p.m in Room 32AB.

Illustrators, storyboard artists and concept artists will have two panels of their own on Saturday, July 24. The morning session at 10:30 will include Harrison Ellenshaw, visual effects supervisor on “TRON” and many other major sci-fi films; Dave Lowery (“Cowboys & Aliens,”) Simeon Wilkins (“Hellboy,”) Tim Burgard (“2012″) and Ricardo Delgado (“How To Train Your Dragon.”) Len Morganti (“New Moon”) will moderate.

Saturday afternoon at 4:00, illustrators from the Art Directors Guild will join forces with their colleagues from the Costume Designers Guild to explain how they work together to provide the entire physical look of movies and TV shows. Harrison Ellenshaw will moderate Benton Jew (“Cowboys & Aliens” and the next “Pirates of the Caribbean”), Phil Saunders, concept artist on “Tron 2″ and illustrator on “Iron Man,” and Robin Richesson, storyboard artist on “Mad Men” and “Evan Almighty.” Representing the costume illustrators will be Christian Cordella (“Cowboys & Aliens” and “Thor”) and Brian Valenzuela (“Star Trek” 2009).

This year, for the first time, an exhibition of production art will be held at the Bayfront Hilton Hotel throughout Comic-Con. Some 350 illustrations-finished art, concepts, storyboards and costume designs will be on display, with curators on site explaining the stories behind the art.
