‘Captain America’ Contenders Include: Krasinski, Crawford, Vogel, and More!

The Hollywood reporter has revealed that actors in the running to play the role of Steve Rogers in Marvel Studios’ big screen adaptation of the Captain America comic book series include: John Krasinski (The Office), Michael Cassidy (Smallville), Patrick Flueger (The 4400, Brothers), Scott Porter (Friday Night Lights), Wilson Bethel (Generation Kill) and Mike Vogel (Cloverfield).
Screen tests for these actors are set to be conducted this week and next at Marvel’s Manhattan Beach headquarters. The studio has put all of the actors on a 30-day hold during the testing process, but sources state that it is not guaranteed that they will pick an actor out of this pool. Several actors actors, including Chace Crawford, are also in talks with the studio, but are not signed on to take part in the first batch of screen tests.
I could actually see John Krasinski as Steve Rogers, because the part calls for someone that can play pre-Super Soldier Steve as a 100-pound weakling, but can also pull of the Captain America look. I think he could pull of both looks quite well. I just hope he doesn’t keep looking to camera through the whole movie (only fans of The Office will get that one).
Paramount Pictures is set to distribute The First Avenger: Captain America on July 22, 2011. The film is being directed by Joe Johnston, produced by Kevin Feige, with a screenplay is being written by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely. No cast members have yet been announced.
