JMS & Geoff Johns to Write Superman: Earth One and Batman: Earth One Series for DC

2

It was announced on the their blog today that DC are planning a new series of OGNs starring legacy characters such as Superman and Batman, set on Earth One.

Starting next year, DC Comics will unveil SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE and BATMAN: EARTH ONE, two graphic novels spotlighting the most powerful heroes of the DC Universe, with their first years and earliest moments retold in a standalone, original graphic novel format, on a new earth with an all-new continuity.

Where they say “new earth”, they mean A new Earth, rather than The New Earth, where all of DC’s current continuity is set… I know, it’s freaking confusing!

The first of the planned series is Superman: Earth One, by J. Michael Straczynski and artist Shane Davis. This series will see a return to smallville, to live through the early days of Clark Kent as he grows to accept the Superman mantle.

Not to sound cynical, but haven’t we heard this story enough already? There have already been several origin stories for Superman, and there is even a new one being told right now by Geoff Johns, in the form of Superman: Secret Origins. I know this new series will be set in a separate continuity, but unless they mix it up a bit, like Red Son, I can’t see how this one will be very interesting!

The second announced series is Batman: Earth One, by Geoff Johns and artist Gary Frank. Which will be another origin story for Batman, showing Bruce Wayne’s parents getting murdered and yada, yada, yada… I think we’ve heard this story before!

Sorry to sound all douchey about this, but come on! This idea is hardly dripping with originality, is it?

JMS has been quoted as saying:

“What I’m trying to do is to dig in to the character and look at him through modern eyes. If you were to create the Superman story today, for the first time, but keep intact all that works, what would it look like?”

“It is monumental for us as comic readers to see Superman birthed for the first time,” Davis said. “It’s a privilege to realize that you’re the artist that gets to draw it, better yet having the luxury to do it in an original graphic novel. This is going to be epic!”

… and Johns says:

“BATMAN: EARTH ONE allows Gary and I to break the restraints of any continuity and focus on two things: character and story.”

So there you go, hardly the big news I was expecting. I think the term is ‘Flogging a dead horse’, but that’s just me.

  1. THANK YOU ED! I agree 100%…how many damn times do we have to hear about that wanker Superman!?!?!?!

Hah! Well, from what I here, Next year’s big EVENT will be a Superman book, so look forward to that!

I’ve no problem with the character really, but I think we’re all sick of hearing the origin story. I like the ORIGINAL origin best, it was just one page, and I think it covered everything quite nicely. It didn’t need a six issue series to bore us all with!
