Douglas Wolk Highlights Select Graphic Novels from 2009 for the New York Times
![]() |
Over on the New York Times website, Douglas Wolk (author of Reading Comics: How Graphic Novels Work and What They Mean) has written an article highlighting “some books I liked a lot that the Times hasn’t covered yet this year.”
Topping the list is Kyle Baker’s Special Forces, with notable appearances from Gabrielle Bell’s Cecil and Jordan in New York: Stories, Lilli Carré’s Nine Ways to Disappear , Seth’s George Sprott, The Toon Treasury of Classic Children’s Comics, Michael Kupperman’s Tales Designed to Thrizzle: Volume One, and Andrei Molotiu’s Abstract Comics.
It’s a really fascinating article, highlighting some great books from the last year that did not receive as much exposure as they deserved. Head here to read it!

Glad you liked it! I should note, though, that that’s not my list of my favorite books of the year–just “some books I liked a lot that the Times hasn’t covered yet this year.” The ones I’m particularly waving the flag for are more like the list at http://bnreview.barnesandnoble.com/t5/Personal-Picks-Best-of-2009/The-Best-Graphic-Novels-of-2009/ba-p/1849 …
Hi, thanks for commenting!
I must apologize, I complete misread that as being your Top Picks. The NYT website just titled it ‘comics’, and it being year end right now, I just assumed. I did wonder why Asterios Poly wasn’t in the list, as that seems to be a very popular choice this year.
I have amended the titles and content of this article, and will do another post linking to your B&N list, shortly.
Thanks again for letting me know.
