Diamond Announces the Top Publishers & Products for November 2009
![]() |
Diamond Distribution just supplied Hypergeek with data for the top publishers and products for November 2009.
If you are not familiar with how Diamond’s sales figures, here’s how they are calculated:
Data for Diamond’s sales charts—which include the monthly market shares and all top product charts—are compiled by Diamond Comic Distributors from a universe of over 4,000+ accounts, comprised of comic book specialty shops and other merchant stores and buyers. The shops are primarily located in North America, with a percentage of sales also to international stores and buyers located throughout the world. The account base includes brick-and-mortar comic book specialty shops, Internet merchants, and other specialty stores.
Unit and dollars sales are calculated based upon orders invoiced and shipped to Diamond accounts during any given month, which comprises initial pre-orders, advance reorders, and reorders, minus any copies that are received back from a title marked as returnable.
The data therefore does not reflect the actual number of units that ended up in the hands of customers, but rather is based upon what retailers estimate that they will be able to sell. The obvious flaw to this system is that if a retailer made a huge over-order for a certain title, and ended up having to pulp a few hundred books, this will not be reflected in these sales charts. Also, this list does not reflect the amount of customers who buy their comics directly from the publisher by subscription or other means. It’s not perfect, but its as close as we’re going to get…
The following charts show the top 11 publishers, the top 10 comics, top 10 graphic novels & trades, Top 10 toys & statues, and top10 games for the month of November 2009.
This will be followed in a few days by a more in-depth rundown of Diamond’s top 300 list for November 2009.
Top 11 Publishers
The numbers below reflect the overall market share of the Top 20 comic publishers for the month of October 2009. The number in the first column is the market share in terms of actual units sold, and the number in the second column is the market share in terms of the total dollar amount per publisher.
Marvel Comics took the top publisher spot in November, leading in both the Unit Market and Dollar Shares categories, with a 41.93% Unit Market Share and a 36.50% Dollar Share for the month, meaning an increase of of 1.82% and 1.35% respectively from last month’s numbers!
DC Comics came in second this month, with a 34.78% Unit Market Share and a 31.71% Dollar Share for the month, meaning an decrease of 2.91% and 2.11% respectively from last month’s numbers! DC had a pretty strong month in October, but things seem to be settling back to how they were before last month’s boost.
The rest of the publisher’s top 10 is almost a carbon copy of the chart’s from October, September, and… back to the dawn of comics. There are a few fraction of a percentage changes in the non-DC/Marvel publishers, but no position changes.
| PUBLISHER | UNIT SHARE | DOLLAR SHARE |
|---|---|---|

Top 10 Comics
Nekron rose from the underworld to command his legion of Black Lanterns as their attack on the DC Universe continued in Blackest Night #5, the latest chapter of Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis’ crossover event, giving DC Comics the best-selling comic book title for November 2009, based upon total unit sales to comic book specialty shops. This is the fourth month that Blackest Night has taken the #1 spot in the charts! DC must be pretty damn pleased with that!
Green Lantern #48 took the number two spot, coming up one position from last month. Obviously the Blackest Night love is spilling over into the main GL title!
Captain America: Reborn makes a reappearance this month, after taking a skip-month in October. However, issue #4 of the title only clocks in at position three this month, where issues #3 and #2 both took position 2, and issue #1 was the top seller back in July.
Batman & Robin #6 takes the number four comic spot, dropping two positions from October. Looks like interest is waning a bit for this title, possibly due to the appearance of one of the DCU’s least popular characters, The Red Hood!
Justice League of America #6 takes position five, Adventure Comics #5 takes position six, and Green Lantern Cops #42 took position seven; all of these titles never appear in the top 10 list, but these were the Blackest Night tie-ins that came with the “free” promotional rings. A clever marketting move on the part of DC!
Flash: Rebirth #5 jumps into the charts at position nine, showing that despite the long delays this miniseries remains incredibly popular! (I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many DC titles in the top 10!)
New Avengers #59 and Dark Avengers #11 both appear in this month’s top 10 list, albeit at far lower rankings than normal. Bendis’ Avengers titles are two of Marvel’s most popular monthy titles, and are always in the monthly top 10; however, it looks like Blackest Night is kicking their butts!
