Garth Ennis Talks to Dynamite About The Boys and Battlefields
![]() |
Dynamite Entertainment have posted an interview with Garth Ennis, which covers his work on The Boys, and the upcoming second volume of Battlefields.
In the interview Ennis discusses the recent two-issue arc, which told the origin story of the Mother’s Milk character, and discusses future story lines, such as the origin of The Frenchman in The Boys #27, and the origin of The Female in The Boys #38. Of these two characters Ennis says:
Frenchie’s crazy up to a point, but he is ultimately a rational person who can relate cause and effect. With the Female, all bets are off.
The interview then discusses the conclusion to the first boys pin-off miniseries, Herogasm, and the consequences of the story’s finale. When asked what effects the events of the mini would have on the main series, Ennis replied:
You’ll see The Homelander get closer and closer to the destiny he’s been denying up to this point- or at least that’s how he might see it. You’ll see Hughie dealing with the fallout from his encounter with Black Noir. Further down the line, the secrets that the Boys uncovered regarding the 9/11 disaster will begin to come to the fore.
Ennis also states that he doesn’t see anymore spin-off series in the comic’s future, but that there will be big origin stories for Butcher and Wee Hughie coming up. He also says that upcoming stories in the series will make Herogasm look “like a quiet night out”!
Ennis goes on to mention that after the single issue origin stories for The Frenchman and The Female, the next arc will be called ‘The Innocents’, and will be four issues, precededed by a prologue issue, of which he says:
That has some of the threads from the first three years of the book starting to unravel, as Hughie’s romance with Annie January takes centre-stage. It also features something that few people thought they’d ever see in The Boys – genuinely good superheroes. The real thing.
The interview then talks about the second volume of Ennis’ Battlefields comic, of which he says:
“Battlefields” represents the best work I’m capable of and the stories I enjoy writing above all others. This second series features the return of ‘The Night Witches’ and ‘The Tankies’, both drawn by their original creators, Russ Braun and Carlos Ezquerra, and a new story called “Happy Valley”, about an Australian bomber crew operating over Germany in 1942 – that’s drawn by PJ Holden, a talented British artist. Check ‘em out.
