Variety.com has reported, and Warren Ellis has confirmed the news, that Legendary Pictures have optioned Ellis’ Avatar Press comic series, Gravel!

Gravel is the name given to a series of limited and ongoing series by Warren Ellis & Mike Wolfer, illustrated by Mike Wolfer, and published by Avatar Press. Gravel is centered around British ‘combat magician’ William Gravel,  a soldier in the British S.A.S. who uses his skills in dark magic to moonlight and battle supernatural beings for clients in order to make some extra cash.

William Gravel initially appeared in 1999 in the Strange Kiss limited series, which was followed by a sequel, Stranger Kisses. The third series was titled Strange Killings, which remained the name for the subsequent limited series, until the latest ongoing series called Gravel. With Gravel, Wolfer became the co-author with Raulo Cáceres joining as the first of what has been described as a “revolving team” of artists.

Ellis will pen the initial draft of the screenplay for the movie, and serve as executive producer on the project.

Rick Alexander, who is a producer on Executive Vice President of Fairyland at MGM, will produce with Legendary Pictures, which is soon to be releasing Where the Wild Things Are through Warner Bros.

Other Warren Ellis properties in development include Red, currently in pre-production at Summit Entertainment, and Ocean, in development at Warner Bros.

Legendary is currently shooting Inception, Sucker Punch, Jonah Hex and the remake of Clash of the Titans at Warner Brothers, and is developing a bigscreen version of Warcraft, with Sam Raimi helming.
