In This Month’s Zuda Comics Competition, Hypergeek Endorses The Symptoms!

Zuda Comics is a web imprint of DC Comics. Every month Zuda holds a competition where creators are invited to submit an eight-page strip, to be voted on by readers of the website. At the end of the competition period, the comic which wins the popular vote becomes a new ongoing series, and the creators are given a contract with Zuda Comics.

This month there are several great entries into the competition, all by wonderfully talented writers and artists. It was an incredibly tough decision to choose who to vote for, but in the end I chose to go with The Symptoms, which is a strip written by Dave Hendricks, with artwork by Will Sliney, who is probably best know for his work on BOOM! Studios’ Farscape series, and as a contributing member of Eclectic Micks.

The Symptoms are a super-powered punk rock band, and the eight-page story basically gives us an origin for each member of the group, and introduces us to what their powers are. First is Kinger Lode, who seems to have the power of invulnerability, which he discovers shortly after shooting himself in the face, in a failed suicide attempt; then we have Violet Spray, who is a sexy seductress speedster; and last but not least is Reap, who is a huge muscleman with a mean ‘tache!

In this first issue we also get introduced to Zenos, who are these odd zombie-esque guys who have overrun the world.

The official blurb for The Symptoms says:

A star virus ruined the world. A conspiracy of war delivered us heroes and a punk rock band is fighting to keep us safe. They are The Symptoms. This is their story.

Sound’s suitable odd right? I love it!
