Thrill-Power Thursday – The Weekly Droid Watch – August 6th 2009

Occasionally, Tharg permits some of his script & art droids to leave 2000 AD headquarters. In the Weekly Droid Watch, I’m going to be keeping an eye on what present and former droids have been up to this week. 2000 AD droids tend to go on to produce some of the most phenomenal U.S. comics, so I’ll also be listing what comics released each week have that extra special shot of thrill-power.

Webcomic Updates

Lilly MacKenzie & the Mines of Charybdis
  • Written and drawn by art droid Simon Fraser,Lilly Mackenzie & the Mines of Charybdis by is a graphic novel being serialized weekly, for free, on the well known Webcomics Collective ACT-I-VATE. The latest page is Chapter 4, Page 32 – Things are looks rough for Lilly!
Spazzmoid
  • Written and drawn by art/script droid Bob Byrne Spazzmoid is a weekly webcomic with very weird, very random, and very funny updates. This Week’s update is called USN Paedo Apocalypse Part 13, and is probably not for the easily offended :)

Eclectic Micks

Eclectic Micks are a collection of Irish professional comic book artists. They include Stephen Mooney (Angel; After the Fall), Stephen Thompson (Star Trek; New Frontier, Presidential Material: John McCain), PJ Holden (Fearless, 2000AD) Nick Roche (Transformers, Doctor Who), Will Sliney (Farscape), Bob Byrne (Mr. Amperduke, 2000AD) and Declan Shalvey (28 Days Later, Frankenstein). Every day there is a new sketch posted there, with each artist posting on a certain day.

Apart from regular updates by art droids Holden and Byrne, this blog is packed full of gorgeous art from insanely talented individuals, so check it daily!

  • Art & script droid Bob Byrne posted this ridiculously disturbing picture of the 1988 horror movie Killer Klowns from Outer Space. I saw this when I was 9, and it was fucked up! Gonna have nightmares tonight…

Scotch Corner

Scotch Corner is a collection of Scottish professional artists. They include Thomas Crielly, Gary Erskine, Andy Hepworth, Jon Hodgson and Graeme Neil Reid. Every day there is a new sketch posted there, with each artist posting on a certain day.
Much like Eclectic Mick’s, you should check this blog every day, to check out amazing new artwork!

Droid Personal Blog Updates

  • Art droid extraordinaire Leigh Gallagher just posted a making-of process for the cover to the upcoming Defoe Graphic Novel. Head over to see the whole process, and watch how he goes from this:

    Leigh also posted this amazing sketch of Judge Dredd in the hopes that Tharg will let him draw “old stony face” one day. My god, that would be awesome!

  • Script droid Dan Abnett mentioned on his blog that he received copies of his upcoming Warhammer 40K novel Bloodpact, so keep an eye out for that in bookstores!
  • Art Droid D’Israeli has some some illustrations in this month’s MacFormat magazine. He’s posted one of the featured images on his blog, and written an interesting post on the creation process.

  • Art droid Sean Phillips has been posting tons of artwork on his blog this week, including these gorgeous inks for Incognito:

  • Art/script droid Bob Byrne posted a rant on his blog that begins “Dear Kitty, Sorry I haven’t written for so long as I have been busy getting my balls sucked on a beach”… which is the most normal part of the whole thing :) Check it out!
  • Art droid Simon Gurr has announced on his blog that he will be attending BristolCon 09 on 26th September. He’ll be there as part of the Art Show, with a pile of original work to show and sell. so, if you are at the con, be sure to check out his awesome artwork!
  • Art droid Gary Erskine has announced on his blog that he will be signing at the Kingdom of Adventure shop in Kirkcaldy, Scotland on 8th July, and will be attending the Edinburgh Book Festival again on Monday 24th August 2009 at 5.30pm for a How to Draw Comics class.
  • Former 2000 AD editor David Bishop has found out that one of my scripts is through to the semi-finals of the 2009 Page International Screenwriting Awards. His semi-finalist script is THE WOMAN WHO SCREAMED BUTTERFLIES, which he first write a year ago for the BBC Sharps opportunity
  • Script Droid Tony Lee has announced that he will be attending two US based Doctor Who conventions. He’ll be over in Florida for the Hurricane Who convention, and in Chicago over Thanksgiving weekend as a guest of Chicago TARDIS, alongside such luminaries as Paul McGann, Jason Haigh-Ellery and Nick Briggs.

    He also posted newsthat the creators of the Kamikaze! comic reader for the iPhone, have uploaded a couple of AAM/Markosia titles for it Hope Falls by Tony Lee & Dan Boultwood. I shall have to check that out!
