Trautmann & Jerwa’s Webcomic Wide Awake Optioned for Movie Adaptation

Today I was sent over a press release from a company called Do-Over Productions, informing me that the webcomic Wide Awake had been optioned by the studio for a movie deal. “What is Wide Awake?” you might be asking yourself. Well, I’ll admit, I had no idea either, until I clicked over to the comic’s site. What I found there was a fantastic webcomic that I thought must be shared with the world, so read on, go to the site, read the strip, and let me know what you think… maybe pick up a poster, or throw the guys a donation while you are there!

Wide Awake is a weekly webcomic created and co-written by Eric Trautmann and Brandon Jerwa. The artwork on the book is provided by Mirco Pierfederici, with David Messinagel serving as art director and providing ‘covers’. The first glimpse of Wide Awake was a short story called ‘Behind the Wall of Sleep’, which was published in the Image Comics anthology Popgun, Volume 2. This opening 6-page story has now been uploaded to the Wide Awake website, where it is viewable for free. Wide Awake is a horror/adventure comic that tells the story of Amanda Carter, a young woman whose dreams of terrifying monsters are much more than just figments of her unconscious mind. If she doesn’t defeat them before she wakes up, the horrors from her dreams get loose in the physical world and she must deal with them there.

I found the first six page issue of Wide Awake to be a really fun read. The concept is one of those “I wish I’d thought of that” ideas that is just dripping with great story potential. Trautmann and Jerwa treat us to a brilliantly paced short, which deftly introduces our protagonist, and the nightmare world in which she lives. The story is overlaid with internal monologue from the lead character, which gives it a rather isolated and paranoid atmosphere, mirroring the feelings of the protagonist. The issue ends with an action scene full of gore, as Amanda faces her demons, and concludes on a nice little cliffhanger that raises some questions… leaving us on the edges of our seats waiting for more! The art on the series, by Mirco Pierfederici, is incredibly detailed, and suits the content of the story really well, as it is dark, rich, and luscious. I’m looking forward to seeing more of this!

So far, only the first six issue of Wide Awake are available, but the team is is working in earnest on getting more content ready for launch, so they can stay ahead of schedule and publish six new pages every Friday. New pages should begin appearing soon, so keep an eye on www.wideawakeonline.com for more news. This one looks great!
