Hypergeek’s Hot Picks – Comic Book Recommendations for the Week of Wednesday 29th July 2009

1

Hypergeek’s Hot Picks is a weekly column on the site, where I take a look through the list of comics being released that week, and decide which ones I think are worth picking up. I then pick out the comics which I am most looking forward to, and tell readers why I think they will be that week’s hottest comics.

With most of the comics that I recommend, I have usually read a pre-release copy, and enjoyed it, or I have read a preview of the comic, and can predict that it is going to be a good read. At the end of the day though, it’s just my opinion, so don’t take it *too* seriously :)

I apologize that Hot Picks is running a little late this week, and I am also sorry if I seem a little rushed and distracted. I am dealing with rather a lot of stuff in my personal life this week, as my mum’s health has taken a turn for the worse, and she is back in hospital in critical condition due to complications from her cancer. My UK passport runs out tomorrow, so I trying to figure how the heck I can get back to see her… it’s not looking good

Normal services will resume, as soon as normal life is resumed…

This Week’s Hottest Comic Picks

My top comic recommendations for this week! Make sure you buy them if you buy nothing else from the Hot Pick stack!

Bill Willingham and Matthew Sturges are two of my absolute favourite writers. Their work on Fables, Jack of Fables, and House of Mystery has been nothing short of legendary. Both writers’ forays into the DCU have been equally impressive, with Willingham’s amazing work on Shadowpact, and Sturges’ great work on the recently canceled Blue Beetle comic, which now runs as back-ups in Booster Gold.

This new arc on Justice Society of America marks the first time that the pair have collaborated on a DCU superhero comic, and the JSA seems like a perfect fit for the partnership’s classic writing style. I can’t wait to see where they take the extended team now that Geoff John’s has done relaunching it, and I am sure that it will be memorable!

New work from Los. Bros. Hernandez is rare enough, but a story by the incredibly elusive Mario Hernandez? Sign me up for that! The story is co-written, and illustrated in gorgeous B&W, by none other than Gilbert “Beto” Hernandez, and looks to have that trademark Hernandez weirdness to it that fans love so much. The story is set in a oddly askew future, twenty years after the most lifelike robot in the world was engulfed in scandal, arrested, and deactivated. Now, an anti-robot movement has arisen, and body modification and prosthetic limbs are flooding the black market. It’s a bizarre sexy robot story that questions what it really means to be human. Well, that’ what I have gleaned from the solicitation, and I can’t wait to find out more!

This is the second issue of Greg Rucka’s ‘Batman Reborn’ relaunch of the classic series, which sees his re imagined Batwoman character take over the title, with backup features starring his reinvented version of the Question. Last month I did a review of Issue #1 of the series and it  impressed me greatly with its fantastic storytelling by Rucka, and gorgeous artwork by JH Williams III and Cully Hamner. This is a truly amazing book, and I cannot wait to read more!

Solicitation:

The Complete Dracula #1 was my top pick of the week for Wednesday May 20th. I also did an advance review of issue #1 of the series where I concluded:

I was incredibly impressed with every single aspect of this book, from the writing, to final presentation. This book is the complete package. It is sheer perfection! It is the best adaptation of Dracula that you will ever read. I will definitely be picking up all five issues of this wonderful achievement in the art of comic book adaptations. I suggest you do too

I haven’t yet read issue #2 but I am rather looking forward to getting my hands on a copy! Recently I was lucky enough to interview John Reppion and Leah Moore about their amazing work on this adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Gothic classic. It was a really interesting interview, and I would highly recommend checking it out!

Solicitation:

The long-awaited conclusion to the ‘I against I’ story arc, which sees Heath Houston facing down against… Heath Houston?! Yep, in the weirdest storyline yet we find out that everything about Heath’s life is a lie! I cannot wait to read this one, because issue #26 left us on one hell of a cliffhanger, and 5 months have passed since then!! Oh well, good things come to those who wait!

Solicitation:

I have been told that Secret Warriors is supposed to be the best Marvel series in years. Somehow this series has managed to completely pass me by! I’m making up for it now and am going to be picking up this 6th issue of the new series. This is the end of the first story arc, so it’s probably not the best place to start reading, but I’m sure I’ll be able to figure it out! I’m definitely going to be picking up the trade of the first arc too, to see what all the fuss is about!

My Complete Hot Picks

These are all the comics that I am buying this week. They are all certain to be good, otherwise I wouldn’t be buying them. Would I??
