Small Press Spotlight: A Profile of Unico Comics
![]() |
The Small Press Spotlight is a semi-regular feature on Hypergeek where I dedicate an article to all the excellent small press and indie publishers out there, as well as self-publishing artists. This is accomplished in the form of company/creator profiles, highlights of key works, reviews of the company/individual’s latest releases, and general articles about the small press scene.
Today I plan to do a feature on UK small press publisher, Unico Comics, followed shortly by a review of their upcoming comic release ‘The Legend Known as…‘.
Unico Comics is a small-press comic publisher based out the North-East of England. The company was founded in 2005, and brings together a group of amateur artists and writers who hope to become a success in the small-press comic book community and beyond.
Unico was co-founded by artist Steven Howard and writer Michael Burness, who both also do work for Accent UK. Other talent involved with the company include artists, Johnnie Iley, and Mark Bell.
Releases so far from Unico include:
Unico Collections #1-3
An anthology series that was started by Unico and the Amateur Comics Guild. The collections take the form of an amateurs only comic book open to any artist or writer from across the UK who felt they were up to the challenge to make their own comic. This was aimed to give aspiring artists and writers a chance to show their talent through this graphic novel and give them that rare first step on to the small press network through website, shop and convention sales.
Uncle Tickle
This horror comic tells the story of Uncle T
ickle, a children’s television presenter who, after his show gets canceled, goes crazy on live TV, and kills everybody in the studio. Now he travels the country dispensing his own sickly humorous brand of retribution to all the bad little boys and girls while making special friends with the police along the way.
Borderliners: Ceremony of Innocence
This title is a spy /thriller series, which Unico describes as “‘Spooks’ meets Philip K Dick with television influences including ‘The Avengers’, ‘The Professionals’, ‘The Champions’, and ‘The Prisoner’.” The title follows the adventures of Agent Marley battles for his life and the Borderliner project.
The legend known as…
‘The Legend Know As…’ is Unico’s latest release, and has the accolade of being their first full-colour release. The story is set in the year 2027, 13 years since the Kato environmental disaster. The world has changed, Governments have fallen, and society is holed up in the ruins of whatever cities are left. In a small city in New England 8-year-old Thomas, his mother and his sister Katie live. Like everyone, their lives are lived in fear of the gangs that roam what is left of the cities. That is until an unknown man enters the ruins and starts cleaning the place of the scum.
