Hypergeek’s Hot Picks – Week of Weds 20th May 2009

1

What a week! There are so many great comics out this week that it was hard to pick my favourites. This week marks the 112th anniversary of the publication of Dracula, and both my top comic and top GN of the week are both Dracula projects. Coincidence? Hmmmmm… I think not :)

It’s also a good week because it is the week of my birthday! I will be 30 years old this Saturday, May 23rd. I am old and require presents, please send me stuff! I joke, though I do have an Amazon wishlist if any kind souls out there are feeling charitable…

OK, on with the list…

The deal with Hypergeek’s hot picks is that every week I like to pick out a few comics that I think are a good bet to fork out your dough on. With most of the comics that I recommend, I have usually read a pre-release copy, and enjoyed it, or I have read a preview of the comic, and can predict that it is going to be a good read.

THIS WEEK’S TOP PICK

The Complete Dracula #1

If you would like to know why I have made this fantastic looking book my ‘pick of the week’, then I would suggest looking at the advance review I recently did of the debut issue, where I concluded that:

“I was incredibly impressed with every single aspect of this book, from the writing, to final presentation. This book is the complete package. It is sheer perfection! It is the best adaptation of Dracula that you will ever read. I will definitely be picking up all five issues of this wonderful achievement in the art of comic book adaptations. I suggest you do too.”

I also recently interviewed Leah Moore and John Reppion about this project, if you want to read the interview, then simply click here.

Solicitation:

Dynamite presents an unprecedented comic book series that tells the complete story of the Lord of the Undead–Dracula!

For the first time in 112 years the tale that Bram Stoker intended to tell is told (including ‘Dracula’s Guest’!). If you thought you knew how it began or how it ends, you were wrong!

Writers John Reppion and Leah Moore are joined by painter Colton Worley for a 5 issue odyssey of life, death, and the blood that flows within us all! This fully painted series features a massive 32 pages of story and art per issue, each page fully-painted in a rich, moody style by Worley, all under covers by modern master John Cassaday!

Moore and Reppion also provide bonus material such as script pages, annotations and samplings of the original text by Bram Stoker!

OTHER GREAT COMIC PICKS

Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead #3

This next superb comic is another one for which I did an advance review. I won’t repost the whole review here, but here is an excerpt:

“I REALLY like this book! Pugh has done an amazing job on both the art and writing fronts. As if this wasn’t enough, he even letters the damn book! What a ridiculously talented individual! You should rush out and buy this issue of Hotwire, it is sure to be one of the best things coming out this week.”

Solicitation:

Hotwire’s investigation takes her into the heart of darkness within the Necropolis, where she unearths a conspiracy to plague the city with a legion of mutated ghouls. Her detective instincts may have led her to the truth, but when the restless dead stage a bloody revolt, it’ll take much more than that to survive long enough to do anything about it.

The Boys: Herogasm #1 of 6

Herogasm is a spin-off of The Boys. If you know anything about me, you will know that I love Garth Ennis’ writing, especially The Boys. Herogasm is a six-part miniseries, which will be written by Garth, with artwork from the amazing John McCrea. How can you NOT buy this comic? The book plans to explore what really happens during company-wide crossovers. It is set be a fantastic parody of ‘event’ style comic books, told in that humorous and perverse way that only Garth Ennis can pull off! The story will feature Boys Universe super teams such as The Seven, Payback, Teenage Kix, Fantastico, as they team up to solve a World threatening crisis. Expect blood, sex, swearing and mayhem!

Solicitation:

An evil so profound it threatens all mankind… the mightiest heroes on the planet uniting to defend us all… a secret crisis of such utter finality that a countdown to civil or infinite war seems unavoidable… but have you ever wondered what really happens during Crossovers? The Seven, Payback, Teenage Kix, Fantastico and every other supe on Earth team up for an annual event like no other… and where the supes go, can a certain “five complications and a dog” be far behind? Vought-American prepare to make their move, in a story that will change the world of the Boys forever: Herogasm #1.

The first-ever Boys spin-off mini-series features the pairing of Ennis with Hitman artist John McCrea and covers by Boys artist and co-creator Darick Robertson!

Doctor Who: The Time Machination

I have mentioned on Hypergeek before that I’m not a huge fan of the new Doctor Who TV series. I much preferred the campy 70s and 80s versions, with their hammy acting and bad special effects. The new stuff just seems to take itself too seriously… I dunno, it just doesn’t click with me. However, I have found myself incredibly impressed with the Doctor Who comics which IDW have been bringing out. Doctor Who: The Forgotten by Tony Lee and Pia Guerra was a wonderful little miniseries that explored the history of Doctor Who and saw the Doctor solving the mystery of his own mind to escape from an intergalactic museum in which he was imprisoned. Then they had a great one-shot called The ‘Whispering Gallery’, penned by Moore and Reppion, with wonderful artwork by Ben Templesmith. This new one-shot sees the return of Tony Lee, and features art from another of my favourite artists, Paul Grist. With both of these incredibly talented individuals involved, it is set to be a fun adventure!

Solicitation:

London, 1889 and a time-stranded Doctor needs the help of an old friend to fix the TARDIS… but is beset by pursuers sent by Queen Victoria herself! How is this connected to a previous tale of the Sixth Doctor—and a Fourth Doctor adventure that hasn’t happened yet? And what will happen if the Doctor is captured by the Torchwood Institute? Tony Lee and Paul Grist tell this special standalone tale!

Book, TPB and OGN RECOMMENDATIONS

Ben Templesmith’s Dracula

This isn’t really a comic, or a trade, or a GN. Rather, it is the full novelization of Dracula including an illustration per chapter by Ben Templesmith. I’m a big fan of Ben Templesmith, as constant readers might have noticed. Ben’s artwork is just so unique and instantly recognizable. His depiction of Dracula looks to be quite different from that of Colten Worley’s, but is just as creepy and grotesque. I can’t wait to get my hands on this book and see Ben’s lusciously stylish illustrations!

Solicitation:

Eisner- and Scream Award-nominated writer/artist Ben Templesmith provides 27 all-new, full-color chapter illustrations for this special presentation of a classic horror novel. Originally published in 1897, Dracula is one of the best-selling and most influential stories of all time.

ALL THE REST

There are just so many great comics out this week, that I can’t write a paragraph about every one of them, so here is a list of all the other stuff that I am picking up this week:
